Junior Women's National Team Update #7

A short update tonight.  Canada beat New Zealand today by a score of 7-0 in 6 innings of play.  Canada finished the round robin with a 5-1 record and placed 2nd behind Japan (6-0) and so will go into the playoffs with a double life.  Canada will face off tomorrow evening against the top seed in the other pool - USA.  The game will go at 7:30 pm (Manitoba Time!)

Junior National Team Update #6

Oklahoma City, OK - The Canadian Junior Women’s National Team registered a pair of shutout victories at the WBSC Junior Women’s World Championship on Tuesday, blanking Argentina 7-0 in five innings before shutting out Great Britain 4-0. Taylor Lundrigan (Abbotsford, BC) had a big day at the plate with five hits while four pitchers split the workload in the circle to keep their opponents off the scoreboard.

In the first game, Argentina threatened first as they drew a pair of one-out walks, but were kept off the scoreboard when the runners completed a double steal with the throw to third from the catcher going into left field and the lead runner was tagged out on a play at the plate. Canada’s bats went right to work in the bottom of the inning as Kelsey Jenkins (Delta, BC) led off with a triple over the centerfielder and scored on a single to left by Callum Pilgrim (Abbotsford, BC). Emma Entzminger (Victoria, BC) followed with a double to put runners on second and third before Lundrigan hit a two-run single to right to give Canada a 3-0 lead.

Both teams were retired in order in the second and Canada added a run to its lead in the bottom of the third. Entzminger and Lundrigan hit back-to-back one-out singles to put runners on the corners before Brielle McCullough (Saskatoon, SK) hit a sacrifice fly to left. Argentina got a good chance to score in the fourth with a leadoff single followed by a batter reaching on catcher’s interference, but Canadian reliever Ashley Penney (Victoria, BC) got two big strikeouts followed by a ground ball to keep them off the scoreboard.

Team Canada put the game away by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on the run rule. Entzminger got things started again with a single to left and scored on a single by Lundrigan, who advanced to second on the throw to the plate. A passed ball moved Lundrigan ahead to third and McCullough walked to put runners on the corners before Alisha Welch (Langley, BC) smashed a triple to right to bring both runners in to score for the win.

Desirae Villanueva (Surrey, BC) started the game and earned the win in the pitcher’s circle, pitching three hitless innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Penney allowed two hits and struck out two. Lundrigan had three singles and drove in three runs while Entzminger had a double and two singles and scored three times. Welch added a two-run triple and Jenkins also tripled, while Pilgrim chipped in with a single.

Against Great Britain, Canada got two runners on base on a hit by pitch and a walk in the bottom of the first but was unable to push anyone in to score. Great Britain responded with a pair of singles in the top half of the second, but both runners were left stranded in scoring position on a pop out to second to end the inning. Canada went on to open the scoring in the bottom of the third inning, as Julianna Waldner (Altona, MB) reached on a dropped third strike and quickly scored on a double to center by Jenkins, who advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on a single by Entzminger as Canada took a 2-0 lead.

Both teams went down in order in the fourth before Great Britain got two more singles in the top of the fifth, but Canada was once again able to get out unscathed. After two quick outs in the bottom of the frame, Entzminger was hit by a pitch followed by a single by Lundrigan, with Entzminger advancing to third and Lundrigan to second on the throw. Welch then hit a two-run single to left to increase Canada’s lead to 4-0. Madison Clarke (Edmonton, AB) entered the game in relief to start the sixth and retired Great Britain in order in each of the last two innings to seal the win.

Madison Hope (Winnipeg, MB) earned the win for Canada, scattering five hits over five innings and striking out three, while Clarke struck out two in two perfect innings of relief. Lundrigan registered a pair of singles, with Jenkins adding a run-scoring double and Welch providing a two-run single. Entzminger had a single and drove in a run to complete Canada’s five hits.

Junior National Team Update #4

(Oklahoma City, OK) The Canadian Junior Women’s National Team opened the WBSC Junior Women’s World Softball Championship with a big 11-1 win over China on Sunday. Team Canada broke a tight 1-1 ball game by scoring four runs in the fourth followed by six more in the fifth to end the game in five innings on the run rule.

Team Canada opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, as Kelsey Jenkins (Delta, BC) reached on an error later followed by a hit by pitch to Emma Entzminger (Victoria, BC) and a single to left by Holly Speers (Surrey, BC) to load the bases before an error on a ground ball to shortstop allowed Jenkins to cross the plate for the game’s first run. China got a pair of two-out singles in the bottom of the first, but Canadian pitcher Madison Clarke (Edmonton, AB) got the next batter to ground out to leave two runners on base. Canada put two more runners on in the second on a leadoff walk by Becki Monaghan (Spruce Grove, AB) and another error but was unable to add to its lead, with China managing two more singles in the bottom of the frame but Clarke struck out the side.

Alisha Welch (Langley, BC) hit a one-out single in the third and later beat out a throw to second on a fielder’s choice, but the next batter struck out. China tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Xu Yi hit a one-out double, moved up to third on a ground out to the pitcher and scored on an infield single.

In the top of the fourth, Julianna Waldner (Altona, MB) reached on an error followed by a single to center by Welch to place runners on the corners. After a pair of quick outs, Speers hit a two-run single to center. The two next batters also reached on errors to load the bases before Courtney Gilbert (Delhi, ON) hit a two-run single of her own to right to extend Canada’s lead to 5-1.

China got a leadoff single in the bottom half of the fourth but the three next batters were sat down in order before Canada went back on the offensive in the fifth. With one out, Callum Pilgrim (Abbotsford, BC) walked, Entzminger singled to center and Maude Sigouin (Laval, QC) dropped a bunt single to load the bases. An error by the third baseman allowed one run to score, with another crossing the plate on a hit by pitch by Taylor Lundrigan (Abbotsford, BC). Gilbert hit a run-scoring single to push Sigouin to the plate before both Monaghan and Waldner worked bases loaded walks to bring two more runners in to score. Another error on a ground ball to second pushed another run home as Canada took a commanding 11-1 lead and put the run rule into effect. Madison Hope (Winnipeg, MB) came in to relieve Clarke in the pitcher’s circle in the bottom of the frame and sat China down in order on a ground out to shortstop, a pop out to third in foul territory and a strikeout to end the game.

Clarke earned the win in the pitcher’s circle, allowing one run on seven hits to go along with six strikeouts in four innings of work, while Hope retired all three batters she faced. Offensively, Gilbert hit a pair of singles and drove in three runs for Canada, with Speers hitting two singles and driving in two and Jenkins also contributing a pair of singles and producing one run. Sigouin, Welch and Entzminger each singled to round out Canada’s nine hits, with Waldner and Monaghan drawing bases loaded walks and Lundrigan bringing a run in to score on a bases loaded hit by pitch. China committed eight errors defensively

The National Team Experience: Brooke's Log #4

Things were really busy this past week, Team Canada finished 5-2 at the World Cup of Softball, making it to the final against USA!  Unfortunately we did not win but overall a great game was played by both teams.  The final score was 5-2, but the team is getting better and better every game we play, showing how we are right in it with teams like Japan and the USA!  My overall experience of going to California and playing in my first international national team tournament has been blast, not to mention the fabulous shopping and weather/scenery I encountered.  The days may be long, but at the end of the week you realize how fast it went by and how much fun it was.  Playing in these big games and pitching to such talented and experienced players is exhilarating, every time I hit the mound I get butterflies but in a good way.  I love knowing that I have a strong team behind me, the girls are right it in with me, never missing a beat and always giving their all until the last pitch of the game!  I am excited to to see what life brings this week- tonight we will be playing in the opening game of the Canadian Open against Spain!  Wish us luck!

The National Team Experience: Brooke's Log #3

Day three of the World Cup tournament and things are moving smoothly. Canada is sitting at 4-0 winning against Japan, Tai Pei, Philippines and Venezuela!  Our first game against Japan was so exciting - the energy on the field was amazing. Competing at this level is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. It is also the weirdest and coolest thing when kids are asking you for your autograph at the end of each game.  It really puts into perspective how playing for team Canada is about more than just ourselves. I never would have thought I’d be signing my “autograph” anywhere, and it clearly shows on some of the things I’ve been asked to sign! Haha.

Pitching in my first national team game was so many things, from thrilling to nerve racking to scary and fun all at the same time. The way just putting on the jersey makes you feel is something else. I am very proud to say I am one of the few who has to chance to do the thing that scares and excites me the most.

The National Team Experience: Brooke's Log #2

It has officially been a full week on Team Canada and every day, I love it more and more. The team has been constantly working hard to improve and mesh better as a team.  It is awesome to see everyone always putting in 100% whether it is to practice or play.

Fortunately we were able to start playing a couple days ago! We had a couple exhibition games in BC and just finished the exhibition games in California. Yes California! The beautiful, yet hot State where we will be playing the World Cup - starting tomorrow (Monday).  We kick things off with a game against Japan.

During the past few days we have been practicing and playing hard to achieve personal and team goals to prepare for our first tournament. We even got the day off to rest and got to see a little more of California than just the ball field.  Funny thing is, even on our day off most of the team chose this beautiful day to enjoy the California sun while watching the Angels defeat the Houston Astros ( sorry Houston, I was routing for ya!).

I believe with the heart and preparation we have put into the game this past week that it will show on the diamond - especially in these big games coming up against teams like USA, Japan and even Mexico. Wish us luck!

The National Team Experience: Brooke's Log

My first few days with Team Canada have been quite the experience! Day one was a little awkward not knowing anyone, but the ladies on the team made the transition easy as everyone is very nice and very welcoming!

The days have been starting with team breakfasts in the morning followed by practices, games or other team activities. The days are long but boy do they go by fast!  Everyone works hard and we are always eager to get out to the field! We even climbed a mountain as a team - "the grind"- on Grouse Mountain.  That was an adventure climbing up that steep mountain with my new teammates.  It is definitely an experience I will never forget, and now I know that whoever said hiking was easy was wrong!

Along with all of these new experiences there are some pretty sweet perks - like the awesome new gear!!!! I have taken quite a liking to the new sweats and jacket along with many more items I get to wear with pride and represent my country with! I'm loving every day of it and I feel so honoured that I get to work with all these new and accomplished coaches and athletes.  I am excited to see how the rest of the summer goes!

Tryouts

6 days left to register for Team Canada Tryouts...

I love being around people that dream Big!  People that verbalize their dreams and goals as though just saying it outloud means they are more committed to following through.  It is inspiring and I am fortunate enough to work with some in our Team Toba Program!

However, there are also those athletes who sound defeated or apologetic about what they wish they could accomplish.  They need to realize that they are only limited by their own mindset!  If you believe you won't make it, if you believe you can't play at the next level, then you for sure won't!

How easily we give up on our dreams...

This coming summer the Junior and Senior National Teams are having open tryouts and it would be great to have lots of Manitoba athletes who are keen to TRY!

I know there are barriers for some to tryout.  At the U21 age, a lot of athletes are supporting themselves financially and adding a flight and hotel for a tryout is tough to wrap your head around.  However, well finances can be a real issue for some, over the years I have noticed that those athletes who frequently complain about their money situation are usually the same ones who will easily go and drop 100-200$ at Holister or F21 on any given day.  It comes down to priorities and SACRIFICE.

How badly do you want it?  If this is a life long dream, then you have to go for it.  You may not make it, but the more experience you have "doing" tryouts, the better chance you will have in the future.  Many athletes have tried out for years before they made it so don't give up on your DREAM!
