Know the Rules- Part 21
Last week's question:
There are runners on 1B and 3B. The infielders are all positioned inside the baseline, anticipating a bunt or wanting to try a pickoff play on the runners. The ball is hit sharply between the second baseman and 2B. The player misses it, however as the runner from 1B is making her way to 2B the ball hits her on the foot and it rolls into the outfield.
What is the result of the play?
Answer:
Although the ball hit the runner, in this situation the ball is not called dead and the runner is not called out. This is because the batted ball passed a fielder (excluding the pitcher) and no other fielder had a chance to make a play on the ball. If the ball hit the runner before the second baseman could make a play on it (ie. if they were playing behind the line), then the runner would be called out.
This week's question:
We were discussing this at our Team get-together on Saturday...are you allowed to wear jewelry when you play? What are the rules surrounding matching hats and headbands?
