Know the Rules- Part 3

Last week's question:

The batter hits a shot up the first base line and it hits only the orange portion of the double base.  What is the call- fair or foul ball?

The answer is: FOUL ball.  The orange half of the base is there as a safety measure so that there are less collisions at first base between the fielder and the runner.  If the base wasn't there...it would clearly be a foul ball.  If the ball hit in the middle of the double base, then it is considered a fair ball.

Question #3

As the pitcher goes to pitch the ball, they lose their grip and the ball slips from their hand and trickles off towards the shortstop.

a)  What is the call on that pitch?
b) Can any runners advance on this pitch?
