My poor little Know the Rules segment has been forgotten about with all of the excitement of the Team Toba season :( Here is the final question that we left off with ages ago.
We were discussing this at our Team get-together at the beginning of June...are you allowed to wear jewelry when you play? What are the rules surrounding matching hats and headbands?
Answer:
According to the rules, you may not wear any type of jewelry that the umpire judges dangerous- this includes earrings, bracelets, chains, etc. The key word here is JUDGES...which is why you aren't consistently asked to remove your jewelry when you play. It also can't be distracting, so pitchers especially have to be careful.
Even though the umpire may not ask you to remove all jewelry when you play, you still definitely should. You don't want to lose something on the diamond, but more importantly, you don't want to hurt yourself or another player. I don't think it would feel very comfortable to be choked by your own chain or have an earring ripped out of its hole...
If you are asked to take off your jewelry, there's no arguing it...if you refuse, then you can be ruled ineligible and can look nice and pretty sitting on the bench for the rest of the game.
Regarding headbands and hats, for female players they are all optional, and a team may wear a combination of several different headwear items. However, they must all be of the same style and color.
