Know the Rules- Part 20

Last week's question:

A ball is hit, a series of throws and a couple of overthrows follows...details aren't really that important today. As the ball is rolling towards the offensive team's bench, the on deck batter gets in the way of the defensive player chasing the ball, even though they don't think there is going to be any play on any of the runners on base.

Is there a call for the umpire to make?  What is it?

Answer:

This is interference by the on deck batter.  Any player outside of the dugout may not interfere with the defensive player's opportunity to make a play, even if it appears as though there is no play.  The ball immediately becomes dead, interference is called, and the runner closest to home plate at the time of the interference is called out.  If that is not the third out, the other runners are returned to the last base held at the time of the interference, unless they are forced to advance because the batter became a batter-runner.

Moral of the story: get away from live balls that are in foul territory and get out of the way of any defensive player trying to make a play!

This week's question:

There are runners on 1B and 3B.  The infielders are all positioned inside the baseline, anticipating a bunt or wanting to try a pickoff play on the runners.  The ball is hit sharply between the second baseman and 2B.  The player misses it, however as the runner from 1B is making her way to 2B the ball hits her on the foot and it rolls into the outfield.

What is the result of the play?
