Last week's question:
Here is a situation that came up in the chaos that is community club ball. 2 out. Runner on 3rd base. Batter swings and misses at strike 3, but the catcher drops the ball. Chaos ensues, no one knows what is going on. Then the batter starts to run to first base and the catcher throws to first. It has taken so long to do this, though, that the runner on 3rd scored before the batter was put out at first.
Does the run count?
Answer:
NO. Whenever the third out is made at first base, the runs scored before the out do not count. It would be a different story, however, if the throw to first was overthrown but the batter was tagged out trying to get to second base. In that case, the run would count.
This week's question:
A ball is hit, a series of throws and a couple of overthrows follows...details aren't really that important today. As the ball is rolling towards the offensive team's bench, the on deck batter gets in the way of the defensive player chasing the ball, even though they don't think there is going to be any play on any of the runners on base.
Is there a call for the umpire to make? What is it?
