College Update #5

Brittany Hince Siwicki:  The past week has been mostly practice for Britt along with catching up on studies! It was just recently announced UBC has earned a berth to the 2013 Association of Independent Institutions Conference Softball Championships (AII) taking place May 1-3. The top two teams from the Regional championships move forward to the NAIA Nationals. The other qualifiers that UBC will face are; University of Houston-Victoria, California State University-San Marcos, Ashford University and LSU-Alexandria. Go Thunderbirds!

Courtney Kwasnitza:   Illinois College shocked # 3 in the nation Illinois Wesleyan (NCAA Division III) with an emotional 5-4 extra inning victory in the opener of their doubleheader Tuesday. Courtney lined a clutch base hit to lead off the top of the 8th inning and scored the eventual winning run. The Lady Blues lost the nightcap. Courtney went 4 for 7 at the plate for the doubleheader, with 2 runs scored.  Saturday, the Lady Blues split a non-conference doubleheader at Blackburn College. After a 3-0 loss in the opener, the IC bats erupted in Game 2 resulting in a convincing 9-2 victory. Courtney chipped in 2 hits and 2 RBI’s in the win.  A busy week concluded Sunday with a twin-bill on the road against Midwest Conference South Division-leading Monmouth College “Fighting Scots”. IC dropped a 6-2 decision in the opener before scrapping for the split with a gutsy 7-4 win. Courtney had 4 hits in 8 trips to the plate over the two games.

The Lady Blues’ overall season record now sits at 9-10, including 1-3 in Midwest Conference play. IC travels to Greenville College Tuesday for 2 games followed by the “Crossover Tournament” next weekend, where IC plays all five North Division teams.

Danielle Klassen:  Dani continues to be used in a DH role so although her playing time is limited she continues to be effective.  Dodge City was scheduled to play 6 games this week but thanks to the weather only 4 got played.  In the first game they played, the Manitoba connection came through again. Dani’s first at bat was a single which scored a run and advanced another runner to 3rd. Batting next was Crash who promptly stepped to the plate and hit a 3 run homer. Dodge went on to win this game in 5 innings and was helped by the pitching of another Manitoba girl Jaycee Morris who threw a four hitter. Dodge City went on to win the second game of the double header in 5 innings. Dani’s batting average remains around the .450 mark and she has 6 stolen bases.

Hailey Unger:  MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team extended its win streak to six games and stayed perfect at home Saturday afternoon with a pair of conference wins against Doane,(Neb) at McWhirter Field in Mitchell. They play in Lincoln, NE on Sunday at 1pm.  Hailey now has a .483 AVG, .655 SLG, after 6 Conference Games. She also scored 10 runs and stole 1 base over the week.

Makensy Payne:  One of Makensy’s goals for this season was to improve her power numbers while maintaining her batting average and continuing to “spray” the ball all over the field. So far she’s done that, with more extra base hits this season than all of last season. This week, in her first at bat, she met another one of her personal goals: Crash hit her first college ball home run, a three run liner over the fence in right centre. It was an emotional moment, one that caused a lot of screaming among the players and even a few tears! That blast started the whole team off to a big week and, although they had one loss in a 3-1 game, this week’s three wins were all blowouts.

Regan Lawrence:   Dickinson Blue Hawks played 4 games vs Jamestown this past weekend going 3-1. Regan came on in relief in game 1 and threw 5 innings in an error filled 13-6 loss,as Dickinson made 4 miscues. Game 2 Dickinson won 14-4. In game 3 Regan came on in relief in the 5th and threw the final 3 innings not allowing a run and they won 9-7. Game 4 saw Dickinson win 18-5 in 5 innings. Homeruns were the story of the weekend as the Blue Hawks hit 13 in 4 games. Dickinson travels to Billings Montana for 2 games Wednesday and then Mayville North Dakota on the weekend for 4 games.

Taylor Studler:   Minot state went 3 and 3 this week in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. They also won 2 jv games vs Bottineau. Busy week ahead as they have 7 games pending.
